Getting a Dog

My Girlfriend and I are thinking about getting a dog (Just like OBAMA). Our apartment is a bit on the small side, but we do have a bit of room in the back yard to tie it up.

Since we are just beginning to look into this, what would be a good breed?

Does anyone know a good shelter where we can go to look around?

Also, is there anything I should know about having a dog in this city?
